Interactive Online Training with HKBU and Cinematographer Henry Chung
Blackmagic Design Certified DaVinci Resolve Trainer, Sze was scheduled to deliver Certified DaVinci Resolve class at Hong Kong Baptist University, as we had done so last year. You can read about that training here. This on site training was suppose to start after Chinese New Year, to be completed within the next few months. Due to the Coronavirus epidemic, HKBU’s campus was closed until further notice. HKBU has been providing eLearning to their students since the months of schedule interruptions started last year.
Here at Fatbars, we decided to take our award winning professional trainings online, using the same platform, Zoom. Currently deployed by top universities like HKBU, around the world.
Over 24 students from HKBU attended each of our eLearning sessions that covers film colour grading basics, colour standards and colour management practices. These sessions are part of their Certified Resolve training which the students can learnt before their hands on training. We certainly can run the online training using Zoom and DaVinci Resolve at the same time. The problem lies with DaVinci Resolve software minimum hardware requirement. The lab at HKBU have the hardware but with the campus closed, the students and staff cannot gain access to that equipments. Either all the students get their own high powered computer, with their own expenses, or we wait for their campus to reopen and begin the hands on training.
How is the interactive online training experience with Zoom and DaVinci Resolve?
Zoom’s robust interactive features, we managed to smooth out some DaVinci Resolve operation procedure that Henry encountered. Zoom’s features like share screen and remote control makes it a suitable platform for software training. Here is what Henry said about his experience.
Q1. Was it difficult for you to download, install zoom and start interacting with Sze?
The download and installation was fast and efficient. We were chatting in no time. Very effective.
Q2. Was it helpful that Sze could remote control your computer app using Zoom, and show you how to solve your questions?
The remote control feature saved a lot of time and I could see exactly what I had done wrong. Allowing us to solve the problems in a short time.
Q3. Any other comments on the zoom virtual experience?
The zoom virtual experience is fantastic. Both sides can communicate realtime in audio visual manner. Through screens sharing and remote control, we could really have hands on experience, solving operation problems, in very short amount of time. Communication feedback difficulties from different computers are instantly erased. We could now interactively understand the working process efficiently between Sze and me.
